For cold weather resort skiing, I have owned Arcteryx Fission SV and Theta SV bib pants for over 10 years and they have been extremely hardwearing, comfortable and are still good as new, apart from DWR, which I re-coat once a year. Mild skiing, I wear a Tipsy Elves onesie (always with a wet rump). For mountaineering and alpine/winter hikes, backcountry ski expeditions, I have been using a Mountain Hardwear Beryllium GTX Pro jacket as my shell, though now I have grown out of it width-wise :)
I have been on the look out for about a year for the perfect do-all replacement shell and really struggled to make up my mind. I bought the Alpha SV thinking it was the best choice, though I returned it after I tried it on - the stiff material and high collar zip catches under your chin and I found very annoying. As well as the lack of hand pockets and high-cut underarms.
I then tried on and researched every single jacket Arcteryx had to offer, except the Sidewinder. I thought it looked a bit gimmicky and I had read a review that the curved zip made the material flap in your face while in use, so I didn't consider it. I gave up and started trying other brands to no avail.
After searching the web, reading 'best ski jacket' reviews, the Sidewinder was never the top choice but by luck I read one anyway about the new model. I tried it on and couldn't believe it - everything was perfect. The fit, the lightness, less-stiff material than the Alpha, but best of all, that ol' gimmicky zipper. Even with it all the way done up and no hood, you don't notice the material under your chin. With the hood, there is nothing with better coverage.
No one really cares about how it feels in your home, so I tested it. A quick 25 mile alpine overnighter at 10*F, just me, the dog and 50mph winds. I wore it the entire time, hood up, down, zipped up, unzipped, pit zips open/closed, all with a 40lb pack on. I've found my new jacket!
I'm skiing Thanksgiving weekend so will update the review if necessary, as well as Japan, Utah, Tahoe this season plus a planned winter summit of Mt Whitney. Looking forward to some good times.
For reference, I'm 6ft 235lbs and I got the Large - normally I'm XL. It has just enough room for bib pants, base layer and light mid layer - perfect for me and my natural insulation while moving, at any temp.

2019 and a garment needs to look and withstand the test of time. The build quality and retro/future design is unparalleled. It’s high ceiling zips a baffle to your neck area. The hood itself has a peripheral advantage by its side port release. Gold trimming on the black model makes it appear like a high end wheel cover on your body. Just magnificent.

I have about 6-7 arcteryx shells and they all fit awesome. I have wider shoulders (6'2 240 lbs) and this jacket is the perfect cut in XL. lets you lift your arms above your head with a pack and not pull the sleeves past your gloves. It's great with a pack and its long enough to do up an avvie pack belt and not always have to pull the jacket down past the waist belt of your pack. The zipper is the bomb! No more face chafe! The hood fits nicely over a couple different helmets (even XXL chunky helmets although it is snug and you won't get full range of motion left/right with a big ski helmet especially with a heavy pack).
It leaves me nice room for the cerium or Atom AR to layer underneath. Pockets are nicely accessible with a pack on. I wear this jacket for work and it is by far the best ski shell on the market! DID I MENTION THE SIDE ZIPPER!!!! Awesome!

I have the older 2017 model. During the two season I've had about 80 days on the mountain in these. I've used it for car camping one entire winter as well. I found this shell to be indispensable during the winter. There were many nights I slept in the Sidewinder, as I found it to add about 10 more degrees of protective insulation.
I've taken some pretty bad falls, two of which were rib-breaking yard sales. I can't tell you how many branches I've scraped by either. Through it all, this shell isn't phased one bit and has many years of life ahead of it. Just like another reviewer stated, this shell along with the Stinger bib is the basis of my layering system.
This shell is so bombproof (I hate using that term, but it really is), that while others give up to the elements and head back in the lodge, I hardly notice it while I ski the entire rest of the day.

I’ve used this coat for snowboarding, back country snowmobiling, hiking in the rain and winter camping. It has not let me down in the slightest. It’s kept me warm and dry every time. It’s tough too. I’ve had some pretty good yard sales and the coat held up like a frickin champ. Even shenanigans on a sled doesn’t seem to phase it.

I had the pleasure of purchaisng this jacket in Canada at Arc One last winter. Since then I have taken this jacket on over 20 ski trips in conditions ranging from 40 degrees fahrenheit blue bird day to below freezing blizzard, even below zero.
In those times this jacket has saved me through and through, I can always rely on it keeping the wind and water out.
This jacket has an amazing fit as well. Baggy where it needs to be for flexibility and slim where it can be for an amazing look.
I couldn't reccomend this jacket more for someone who skis or snowboards. Pair this with the atom underlayer and take on any mountain challenge.
I will absolutely but wearing this indefinitely when I ski.

Great jacket, on my second after the first had to be replaced under warranty. Can’t recommend it enough, goretex pro is amazing, the jacket is fantastic. You won’t be disappointed.
Ignore the reviews about the hood being too big, the people complaining about this clearly haven’t pulled on the numerous elastic drawstrings which allow you to adjust multiple parts of the hood allowing it to fit over something as big as a helmet or even just your head and always be the appropriate size.
